Mamaland, a Mota-Engil Group company, is dedicated to the development and maintenance of sustainable systems through a more inclusive approach, with the aim of generating Prosperity for the Planet and for People. The MoRe Project is a large-scale initiative, with an expected duration of 40 years, focused on forest restoration and sustainable development in Malawi. The project aims to restore 555,000 hectares of degraded land through reforestation, agroforestry, and assisted natural regeneration, while promoting the active involvement of local communities. Through this approach, MoRe seeks to generate long-lasting environmental, social, and economic benefits, contributing to ecological resilience and the well-being of populations.

 

Role description:

 

The Forest Manager will play a central role in coordinating and managing all silvicultural activities in the areas surrounding the forest reserves. They will be responsible for the establishment and development of energy forests (Eucalyptus, Pine, Acacia, among others) within the scope of Mamaland’s MORE project. This role involves supervising operations in the MIOMBO biome, with a strong focus on sustainability and integration with carbon projects. The Forest Manager will work closely with nursery teams, forest management, logistics, and safety, as well as with fire prevention and firefighting areas, directly contributing to the overall success of the project.

 

Main responsabilities

 

Develop, together with the management team, strategic and operational plans for timber production, ensuring the effective implementation of the annual forest operations plan;

Coordinate the establishment and maintenance of energy forests in areas adjacent to forest reserves;

Lead large-scale planting operations, including site preparation, planting, ant control, and weed management, with a focus on maximizing productivity and optimizing costs;

Ensure the maintenance of planted areas through the implementation of soil conservation practices, growth monitoring, and phytosanitary assessments;

Contribute to Mamaland’s forest management objectives by promoting ecological integrity and the sustainable use of forest resources;

Supervise fire prevention and firefighting teams, as well as forest surveillance teams;

Establish and strengthen relationships with local communities, government entities, and environmental organizations, ensuring alignment of activities with conservation and sustainability objectives.

 

Experience and qualifications:

 

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Forestry Engineering, Agronomy, or a related field;
• Proven experience in forest management, particularly in silvicultural operations and land management;
• Solid experience coordinating forestry operations with a focus on sustainable practices;
• Strong leadership skills and experience managing multidisciplinary teams;
• Fluency in English (mandatory). Knowledge of local African languages (such as Chichewa) or Portuguese will be an advantage;
• Valid international driving license (preferred);
• Availability for mobility.
