Job Summary
The Line Boring Technician is responsible for performing on-site precision machining to repair and restore worn or damaged cylindrical bores in heavy construction and earthmoving equipment. The role involves operating portable line boring machines, performing bore welding, and ensuring that repaired components meet OEM specifications. The technician will support equipment reliability by conducting repairs directly on-site, minimizing downtime and avoiding unnecessary dismantling of machinery.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform on-site line boring operations to repair worn or misaligned bores in heavy equipment such as excavators, wheel loaders, articulated dump trucks, backhoes, and other construction machinery.
- Conduct bore welding and machining processes to restore damaged bores to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications.
- Set up, align, and operate portable hydraulic or electric line boring machines and related tooling.
- Carry out precision measurements using micrometers, bore gauges, dial indicators, and laser alignment tools to ensure accurate bore alignment and tolerances.
- Interpret technical drawings, equipment manuals, and specifications to determine machining requirements.
- Perform journal turning, flange facing, and related machining activities when required.
- Ensure all repairs comply with engineering standards and safety procedures.
- Maintain and inspect line boring equipment, tools, and accessories to ensure reliability and operational readiness.
- Work closely with mechanics, welders, and maintenance teams to coordinate repair activities.
- Prepare technical reports and documentation for completed repair works.
- Adhere to HSE regulations and site safety standards while operating machinery and performing repairs in workshop and field environments.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills Required.
- Diploma or Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, Machining, Heavy Equipment Maintenance, or a related technical field.
- Minimum 5 years of proven hands-on experience in line boring, machining, or heavy equipment maintenance.
- Experience working with portable line boring machines and welding equipment in construction, mining, or heavy industry environments.
- Experience repairing earthmoving and heavy construction equipment such as excavators, loaders, and dump trucks.
- Strong precision machining and alignment skills.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and specifications.
- Proficiency in using measurement and alignment tools.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in remote or field environments.
- Good communication and teamwork abilities.
