SHEQ Supervisor (m/f)

To support mining operations in the Benishangul-Gumuz region, Mota-Engil is seeking a SHEQ Supervisor to oversee and coordinate Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality compliance across high-risk surface mining activities, including drilling, blasting, excavation, heavy mobile equipment (HME) operations, and fleet maintenance. The role serves as the link between the SHEQ Officers and the SHEQ Superintendent, ensuring operational compliance with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 9001 standards, company procedures, and applicable mining regulations while promoting a proactive safety culture throughout the site.

 

Key Responsibilities

Operational Safety Oversight

  • Monitor safety compliance in drilling, blasting, excavation, loading, and maintenance activities.
  • Conduct regular field inspections to identify and mitigate operational risks.
  • Verify compliance with exclusion zones, traffic management plans, and critical risk controls.
  • Ensure safe work practices are followed across all mining and maintenance areas.

Heavy Equipment & Maintenance Safety

  • Audit and enforce LOTOTO procedures during maintenance interventions.
  • Monitor high-risk activities such as hot work, lifting operations, confined space entry, work at heights, and tyre management.
  • Inspect tools, lifting equipment, pressure vessels, and workshop safety systems.

Environmental Management

  • Monitor hydrocarbon storage and spill prevention controls.
  • Ensure compliance with waste management and environmental protection requirements.
  • Support dust suppression, drainage management, and environmental monitoring programs.
  • Investigate and report environmental incidents and non-conformances.

Quality & Compliance Management

  • Conduct workplace inspections, audits, JSAs, and TRAs.
  • Support compliance with ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 management systems.
  • Participate in internal and external SHEQ audits.
  • Monitor non-conformances and ensure corrective actions are implemented and closed.

Incident Investigation & Risk Management

  • Lead initial investigations into incidents, near misses, and property damage events using ICAM and 5-Why methodologies.
  • Identify root causes and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor the implementation and effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Support site-wide risk assessment processes.

Training, Reporting & Administration

  • Facilitate safety meetings, toolbox talks, and shift pre-starts.
  • Maintain SHEQ documentation, registers, records, and compliance reports.
  • Track training matrices, inductions, certifications, and competency records.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly SHEQ performance reports for management.
  • Coordinate SHEQ meetings and monitor action plans to completion.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

Education

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

Certifications

  • NEBOSH IGC, SAMTRAC, OSHA, or equivalent recognized safety qualification.
  • ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 9001 Internal Auditor certification preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years of SHEQ supervision experience in open-pit mining operations.
  • Experience supporting heavy mobile equipment operations and maintenance workshops.
  • Proven experience conducting inspections, audits, incident investigations, and risk assessments.

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of mining safety legislation and industry best practices.
  • Sound understanding of LOTOTO systems and critical risk management.
  • Experience with ICAM incident investigation methodology.
  • Knowledge of environmental management and spill response procedures.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and report preparation.

  • Willingness to work in a rotational mining environment.
  • Ability to travel throughout operational and maintenance areas of the site.
